Alberta is strengthening its foothold in Southeast Asia as part of a broader effort to diversify agricultural export markets and reduce reliance on traditional North American trade. Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson is leading a trade mission to Vietnam and the Philippines to build relationships, attract investment, and create new opportunities for Alberta’s producers and processors.
Amid ongoing trade uncertainty and the potential for increased tariffs in North America, Alberta is prioritizing global market access. This mission underscores the province’s strategy to position itself as a reliable supplier of high-quality agri-food products.
From June 2 to 7, Minister Sigurdson is meeting with agri-business leaders, government officials, and investors in both countries to promote Alberta’s agri-food sector. The itinerary includes tours of food processing and milling facilities, business networking events, and promotional activities focused on Alberta beef.
Vietnam and the Philippines are already significant export markets for Alberta. In 2024, Vietnam ranked second and the Philippines third among Southeast Asian destinations for Alberta’s agri-food exports, with values of $165.4 million and $91.9 million, respectively. Key exports to Vietnam included beef, wheat, pork, and processed potatoes, while the Philippines imported wheat, pork, prepared animal feeds, and beef.
With combined populations exceeding 210 million, both countries are seeing rising demand for sustainably produced food driven by urbanization and economic growth. Alberta aims to capitalize on this demand by showcasing its commitment to quality, safety, and consistency in supply.
The mission also aligns with broader trade frameworks. Canada and Vietnam are members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which facilitates reduced tariffs and greater market access. Additionally, Canada is exploring a potential free trade agreement with the Philippines, which could further strengthen Alberta’s trade position.
This initiative is part of Alberta’s long-term vision to expand its global trade presence, support its agriculture sector, and ensure the continued prosperity of rural communities and the provincial economy.
