Nova Scotia farmers will soon see more support for water projects, thanks to a new provincial funding announcement.

In a media release this week, the province confirmed an additional $475,000 for the On-Farm Water Management Program. This money will fund all existing eligible applications. It will also open the door to a second round of projects such as wells and ponds.

Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald said the expansion comes at a critical time. “By expanding the funding, we are ensuring that farmers in Nova Scotia have the support they need to improve their water supply and help protect their livelihoods,” he noted.

Nova Scotia Agriculture Minister Greg Morrow added that reliable water is essential throughout the growing season. “This funding will help farms become more resilient in dealing with the impacts of climate change,” he explained.

The Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture welcomed the announcement. President Alicia King said this year’s drought shows how important water security has become. She stressed that the program will strengthen water management, reduce wildfire risks, and help farms keep producing food through difficult conditions.

The On-Farm Water Management Program is part of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. It offers 50% cost-shared funding, up to $15,000 per farm. In 2024 alone, 30 projects received a total of $215,000.
