A Buyer’s Guide to Bull Selection

380

Over the years it’s often been said owning cattle in Ohio was simply a by-product of land ownership. Today, that couldn’t be further from the truth . . . owning and managing a cow herd is a profit center!

Having said that, valuing the various parts of that profit center called a cow herd frequently comes up for discussion. One question that sparks lots of debate each year is what traits should be considered when selecting the next herd sire and what can cattlemen afford to pay for that bull?

That very question was the subject for debate during the March 5 session of the 2026 OSU Winter Beef Webinars. During the evening OSU Extension Educator Allen Gahler and David Felumlee of Claylick Run Farms offered valuable insight into the many considerations for selecting and valuing a breeding age bull in 2026.

The evening began with Garth Ruff, OSU Extension Beef Field Specialist, introducing the evening’s presentations.
