Northern Advance of New World Screwworm Prompts Heightened Alert for U.S. Livestock Sector

The confirmation of a New World screwworm detection in the Mexican state of Nuevo León—approximately 90 miles from the U.S. border—has raised concern among livestock officials and producers across the southern United States.

In a statement issued by Sid Miller, the development was described as a significant and immediate risk to the livestock industry, particularly in Texas. The detection marks the northern-most confirmed presence of the parasite in the current spread, underscoring ongoing challenges in containment efforts.

Growing Concern Over Spread

The New World screwworm, caused by the parasitic fly Cochliomyia hominivorax, poses a serious threat to livestock health. The larvae infest open wounds of warm-blooded animals, feeding on living tissue and potentially causing severe injury or death if left untreated.

Officials note that while response efforts have been initiated, the parasite has not yet been fully contained in affected regions. As a result, vigilance among producers is being emphasized as a critical line of defense.

Call for Increased Surveillance

Producers are being urged to closely monitor animals for signs of infestation, including unusual wounds, irritation, or evidence of larvae. Early detection remains key to limiting spread and reducing the risk of wider outbreaks.

State and federal agencies continue to coordinate response strategies, with a focus on surveillance, reporting protocols, and rapid intervention. Historically, coordinated eradication programs—particularly those involving sterile insect techniques—have proven effective in eliminating the pest from North America.

Industry Implications

The proximity of the detection to the U.S. border highlights potential risks for cross-border livestock movement and trade. A wider spread could have implications not only for animal health but also for market access and production stability.

Producers and industry stakeholders are encouraged to remain informed on prevention and reporting guidelines as authorities work to contain the situation.
