January 27, 2025, marks the opening of applications for the Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP), a federal initiative announced by the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. Backed by $13.5 million in funding, the program aims to create approximately 1,200 employment opportunities for young Canadians in the agricultural sector, equipping them with valuable work experience while addressing labour challenges within the industry.

“The Youth Employment and Skills Program is more than just an employment program—it’s an investment in the future of our agriculture and agri-food sector,” said Minister MacAulay. “This program helps employers meet their staffing needs while giving our young people the support to get their foot in the door—or onto the field—and pursue a career in agriculture.”

Key Program Highlights

  • Support for Employers: The YESP offers up to 50% of salary and benefits costs for employers, capped at $14,000 per hire. Employers hiring youth facing employment barriers are eligible for up to 80% of costs.
  • Prioritizing Indigenous Employers: Applications from Indigenous organizations will receive priority for the 2025–2026 program year.
  • Eligibility: Producers, agri-businesses, industry associations, provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous organizations, and research facilities can apply.
  • Application Period: Employers can submit applications from January 27 to February 24, 2025.

The Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, emphasized the importance of programs like YESP in empowering young Canadians. “Through the YESP, we’re investing in their potential and providing the support they need to confidently shape their futures within the agriculture and agri-food industry,” she said.

Supporting the Future of Canadian Agriculture

The agriculture and agri-food sector is a key contributor to Canada’s economy, and programs like YESP help address pressing labour shortages by fostering the next generation of workers. Since its inception in 2019, YESP has supported the employment of approximately 6,200 youth across Canada, including nearly 2,000 youth facing employment barriers.
