From November 8-10, 2021, the federal-provincial-territorial (FPT) agriculture ministers met in Guelph, ON where national stakeholders, including the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), were invited to participate and outline their priorities for the Next Policy Framework. Following the meeting, the ministers released the, “Guelph Statement”, which aligns with CCA’s priorities. The CCA will build off this momentum and continue to advocate our priorities to the federal government over the coming months.
Guelph Statement Priorities include:

Tackling climate change and environmental protection to support greenhouse gas emission reductions and the long-term vitality of the sector, while positioning producers and processors to seize economic opportunities from evolving consumer demands

Continued and targeted investments in science, research and innovation to address key challenges and opportunities

Supporting sustainable agriculture and economic growth by creating the conditions for Canadian businesses to meet evolving challenges of the interconnected domestic and global marketplace

Building sector capacity and growth through realizing the potential of value added agri-food and agri-products

Enhancing resiliency to anticipate, mitigate and respond to risks, including a robust suite of Business Risk Management programs
Throughout the meetings, a large emphasis was placed on the environment and climate change. CCA President, Bob Lowe, participated in a roundtable with ministers and sector representatives on the role of agriculture in tackling climate change and environmental protection. Lowe presented on the important role the beef sector plays in environmental benefits, ranging from carbon sequestration to biodiversity protection, and the need for further investments and incentives for producers.
