The new regulations for the humane transport of livestock came into force on February 20, 2020, with a two-year transition period on the enforcement of feed, water and rest interval provisions for the cattle sector, which will allow time for education, awareness building, and the development of rest stop infrastructure.
Source: Canadian Food Inspection Agency During the regulatory consultation process, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) submitted comments, questions and recommendations to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and to the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food. CCA continues to work with government to ensure changes made will contribute to demonstrable improvements in cattle welfare and not negatively impact the beef cattle transportation success rate of over 99 per cent. It is imperative that rule changes aren’t going to unintentionally move industry away from the current high levels of success.
