Montana Grassland Conservation Projects Secure $2 Million Investment for Climate and Ranching

141

The Climate Trust, in partnership with Inlandsis Fund, has finalized a $2 million investment in two grassland conservation projects spanning 38,000 acres in Southeast Montana. The initiative aims to preserve rangelands, support generational ranching, and sequester an estimated 450,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

This investment supports the establishment of perpetual no-till conservation easements, safeguarding soil carbon while providing ranchers with financial benefits through carbon credit sales. The effort is part of The Climate Trust’s Grassland Conservation Carbon Program, which offers an innovative funding mechanism for ranchers to protect their land.

Grasslands, among the most threatened ecosystems in the U.S., have faced significant conversion, disrupting wildlife habitats and family ranching traditions. This program helps reverse that trend while providing vital resources to Montana’s ranching community.

The Climate Trust plans to expand its program across the Northern Great Plains, leveraging carbon storage as an effective and immediate climate solution.
