The Kellen Allison Cattle Company has filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Shamrock, Texas, and several petroleum producers, alleging that contaminated municipal water caused the deaths of 650 cattle. The company seeks damages exceeding $1 million, citing financial, operational, and reputational losses.
According to the lawsuit, the cattle operation began using city water in June after private wells depleted unexpectedly. Soon after, the cattle exhibited severe symptoms, including vomiting, erratic behavior, and asphyxiation, with a death rate escalating to 40%, far exceeding the yard’s historical average of 3%. Subsequent testing revealed toxic sulfate levels in the water, allegedly originating from environmental pollutants tied to a former carbon black facility.
The suit accuses the defendants of negligence, nuisance, and breach of contract, claiming they failed to maintain and monitor the water pipeline, leading to contamination. Plaintiffs argue that the City of Shamrock did not adequately warn them of potential water hazards as required by their agreement.
Kellen Allison Cattle Company seeks compensation for livestock losses, veterinary expenses, business disruption, and punitive damages, citing gross negligence. The City of Shamrock has not issued a public statement regarding the allegations.
