The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) sought feedback on recommendations for seed regulatory modernization. The consultation was open for comments from February 8 until May 1, 2024, and covered potential changes that could impact:
- variety registration
- sampling, testing and grading of seed
- sale, import and export of seed
- establishment of an advisory committee and its role in standard setting, including crop varietal purity standards
- establishment of a digital end-to-end seed certification information management system
- establishment of an alternate service delivery arrangement with the Canadian Seed Growers’ Association for certain seed certification tasks currently done by the CFIA
A summary report outlines what we heard from farmers, producers, seed growers, seed analysts, seed developers, seed conditioners, the general public and others who have an interest in seed regulatory modernization.
