Alberta Expands Loan Guarantee Program to Back Beef Producers

Alberta’s cattle producers will soon have more financial breathing room. The province has raised the cap on its feeder loan guarantee program from $150 million to $225 million, giving ranchers greater access to affordable financing.

For decades, feeder associations have been a cornerstone of Alberta’s beef sector. These producer-run cooperatives help ranchers secure low-interest loans to buy and feed cattle. As beef prices rise and global demand grows, that support has become even more essential.

Why the Increase Matters

Higher cattle prices mean higher costs at the farm gate. Without reliable financing, many operations would struggle to maintain herd size, let alone expand. The expanded guarantee allows Alberta’s 45 feeder associations to keep lending at levels that match today’s market realities.

The program is not new. It was launched in 1936 and has since provided more than $12 billion in financing. On average, feeder loans cover nearly one-fifth of Alberta’s calf crop each year. That steady access to capital helps ensure cattle keep moving through the production chain.

Industry Perspective

Industry leaders say the increase arrives at a critical time. George L’Heureux, chair of the Feeder Associations of Alberta, explained the stakes clearly:
“The cost of cattle has risen so sharply that without expanded access to financing, many feeders would have been forced to scale back. This increase means producers can keep herds moving through the system and maintain Alberta’s strength in beef production.”

Looking Ahead

For producers, the expansion brings more than just higher lending limits. It gives them flexibility to manage rising costs, invest in their herds, and prepare for shifting markets.

Alberta’s reputation for premium beef has been built over generations. By strengthening feeder financing, the province is helping ensure producers can continue to meet demand at home and abroad.
