Investment in seed production and digital agriculture continues to grow. Bayer has opened a new innovation facility at the Iowa State University Research Park.
The Seed Production Innovation (SPI) Innovation Center will support advancements in seed quality and production systems. In addition, it strengthens collaboration between industry and academic research.
Located next to Iowa State University, the centre places Bayer teams alongside researchers, students and technology partners. As a result, the company aims to accelerate applied research and develop practical tools for seed production.
Collaboration driving applied innovation
Rather than operating as a standalone site, the facility will serve as a collaborative hub. Bayer plans to host producer education events, technical workshops and joint projects with regional partners.
At the same time, the investment expands student opportunities. These include hands-on training, internships and recruitment into agriculture and ag technology roles.
“This collaboration reflects the kind of partnership that drives innovation and economic impact,” said David Cook.
Focus on digital and data-enabled agriculture
The centre sits near Iowa State’s Digital Ag Innovation Lab. Because of this, teams can more easily collaborate on precision agriculture, automation and data analytics.
Meanwhile, Rick Sanders said Bayer’s presence strengthens the research park’s innovation ecosystem. It also improves connections between companies, faculty and students.
Bayer expects the centre to speed up the development of data-driven tools. These tools can improve efficiency and consistency in seed production systems.
Linking research to on-farm impact
More broadly, the SPI Innovation Center aims to connect research with real-world application. In doing so, Bayer hopes to shorten the path from development to on-farm use.
“The SPI Innovation Center represents a significant step forward in how we connect innovation with producer impact,” said Amanuel Ghebretinsae.
The Iowa State University Research Park is home to more than 145 companies. It supports research, commercialization and workforce development across agriculture and related sectors.
