Canadian Meat Council Adopts Protein PACT to Drive Sustainability in Meat Processing

397

The Canadian Meat Council (CMC) is launching the Protein PACT sustainability framework in Canada, marking a major step toward improving sustainability practices in the nation’s meat processing sector. The initiative, originally developed by the U.S.-based Meat Institute, brings together industry stakeholders to advance sustainability efforts across people, animals, communities, and the environment.

By adopting the Protein PACT, CMC members will collaborate to set and achieve sustainability goals tailored to Canada’s meat industry. The framework encourages pre-competitive cooperation, aligning with international sustainability standards while addressing sector-specific challenges.

According to CMC, Canada’s red meat processing industry already implements science-driven sustainability practices, and this initiative will help showcase those efforts on a broader scale. The framework aims to support continuous improvement in environmental responsibility, animal welfare, and operational transparency.

With the Protein PACT now extending into Canada, the North American meat processing sector is positioned to make meaningful progress in sustainable practices, reinforcing its commitment to responsible production.
