New Beef Check-Off Rules Aim to Standardize Levy Collection Across Western Canada

708

Effective August 1, 2025, updated beef check-off rules will come into effect in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, aiming to improve fairness and consistency in levy collection across provinces.

Under the new policy, the check-off rate applied to cattle sales will be based on the seller’s home province rather than the location of the sale. This adjustment ensures that producer contributions remain in their province of residence, even when cattle are marketed interprovincially.

The change applies to all sales—including those at auction markets, through dealers, and via direct farm-gate transactions—and is expected to simplify compliance and promote transparency across the value chain.

Industry stakeholders, including auction markets and processors, are advised to update their systems to reflect the new seller-based rate structure. The Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency and provincial cattle associations have made transition resources available at cdnbeefcheckoff.ca/2025change.
