Performance Food Group Company (PFG) has opened a new, state-of-the-art meat processing facility in West Salem, Wisconsin. The 60,000-square-foot Grand Western Upper Midwest plant represents a $32 million investment aimed at boosting production capacity, efficiency, and regional distribution.

Replacing the former La Crosse Meat Plant, the new facility is three times larger and features advanced automation technology to improve productivity and product consistency. The expansion is expected to significantly strengthen PFG’s ability to serve customers across the Midwest.

Designed with both innovation and education in mind, the facility includes a fully equipped kitchen and training center that can host up to 20 participants. This space will support hands-on training for employees and customers, helping ensure product knowledge and service excellence.

Grand Western Upper Midwest will continue sourcing high-quality meats from trusted farms and ranches. The facility processes a wide range of beef, pork, veal, and lamb products under PFG’s well-known brands, including Braveheart, Ranahan Ranch, Contigo, Allegiance, and Piancone.

With next-day delivery available to eight operating companies and flexible weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly shipping schedules, the new facility enhances PFG’s PFA consolidation program, which supports 42 operating companies across the country. This improved logistics network helps meet both current and future customer demands.

The grand opening took place on April 30, 2025, with customers, business partners, and community members attending to tour the facility and learn more about its capabilities.

PFG’s investment comes at a time when some competitors are scaling back. Tyson Foods recently announced the permanent closure of its beef and pork plant in Emporia, Kansas, affecting more than 800 workers. Similarly, Perdue Farms plans to shut down its Monterey, Tennessee facility, citing shifting market demands and operational changes.

In contrast, PFG is focused on growth and innovation. The West Salem facility demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to enhancing foodservice capabilities while continuing to deliver premium meat products to customers nationwide.
