Walmart Opens First Case-Ready Beef Facility in Kansas

Walmart has opened its first owned and operated case-ready beef facility in Olathe, Kansas, strengthening its efforts to build a more transparent and efficient Angus beef supply chain. The new 300,000-square-foot plant will process and package beef sourced from Sustainable Beef LLC in North Platte, Nebraska, and supply Walmart stores across the Midwest.

This milestone follows Walmart’s 2022 equity investment in Sustainable Beef LLC, a producer-led operation that sources cattle within a 250-mile radius. The Olathe facility supports Walmart’s goal to improve beef traceability and quality while reducing supply chain complexity.

In addition to boosting beef supply, the plant is creating over 600 jobs in the Olathe region and is expected to generate business for local suppliers and service providers. Packaged beef cuts will be shipped directly to Walmart distribution centers for regional retail.

The project supports Walmart’s broader U.S. Manufacturing initiative, which includes a $350 billion commitment to U.S.-made, grown, or assembled products by 2031. The company continues to invite domestic suppliers to participate in its Annual Open Call event.
