Alberta Invests in Faster Livestock Diagnostics with $9.5M for Veterinary Lab

The Alberta government is committing $9.5 million over the next three years to expand and enhance veterinary diagnostic services at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM). The funding, starting in Budget 2025, aims to strengthen the province’s ability to respond quickly to animal health issues while supporting the growth and sustainability of Alberta’s livestock industry.

For decades, Alberta’s veterinarians and producers relied on out-of-province labs—mainly in Saskatchewan—for diagnostic results. This often meant delays in treatment decisions and disease containment. The new investment ensures that diagnostic testing can now be done locally, resulting in faster turnaround times, lower costs, and improved animal health outcomes.

The UCVM Diagnostic Services Unit plays a vital role in providing accurate, affordable diagnostic services that inform treatment decisions and support animal welfare. The stable funding will help the lab retain skilled professionals, increase its testing capabilities, and support disease investigations within Alberta.

In addition to supporting the province’s livestock producers, the investment also boosts Alberta’s economic resilience and international trade credibility by ensuring strong disease preparedness and food safety standards.

Quick Facts:

  • Alberta’s livestock market receipts totaled nearly $12 billion in 2024.

  • Alberta leads the country in cattle numbers, ranks second for sheep and lambs, and holds 10% of Canada’s pig herd.

  • Annual funding allocation:

    • 2025–26: $3.1 million

    • 2026–27: $3.1 million

    • 2027–28: $3.3 million

The initiative reflects a strategic commitment to animal health, producer success, and Alberta’s continued leadership in livestock care and food safety.
